Philosophy for Children

In the Philosophy for Children approach, no answers are given—children are simply encouraged to reflect on a story and explore its puzzles, using their own imagination and thinking skills.

Here is one teacher’s report of her exciting work with children, using the film and story of Becoming Me. Download her article (.pdf) here.

The Song

Rev. Linda A. Morrow Spencer of Unity Church, Santa Barbara, chose Becoming Me as the focus for Family Day at her church, and asked singer/songwriter Stefana Dadas to create a song especially for this day.

Stefana worked with Unity's youth group to devise a new song that they performed together for the congregation in august 2004. While the song is quite different from the original story — in both text and message — both share the themes of love, creation, oneness, greatness, and becoming ourselves.

The song was so popular that Stefana featured it on her album—Come As You Are—accompanied by children from Unity Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, and Cleveland.

Listen to the song on Spotify.

Faiths for a Future

This manual by the Religious Education and Environment Programme (REEP), edited by Robert Vint, is described as “a resource for teaching environmental themes in religious education.” The manual provides an extraordinary range of information and classroom activities that teachers can use with children. There is a strong focus on interfaith understanding and it is very compatible with Becoming Me. You can order from Amazon UK or contact REEP.

The Amazing Creation Studio

The Amazing Creation Studio program takes its start from the creative process found in the Creation Story, Genesis 1–2:3. As the authors say, “this story tells us about the power we have in co-creating our lives with God. When we are aware of the steps involved in this process we can take a more active role in choosing experiences that reflect who we really are – Divine children of God. The guide is for a weeklong program that encourages children to find their own unique way of expressing their creativity.

The guide is available here.
